It was time for a lazy Sunday. My guest and I had heard good things about The Ship’s carvery and decided to try it for ourselves. We were immediately surprised by the changes that had been made to this popular ‘local’ in Linslade since our last visit. The boring lawn with scattered benches has been transformed. Now, there’s an amazing, decked, enclosed and rather trendy beer garden. The side of the pub has also had a large extension, beautifully decorated to cater for the ever-increasing number of diners.

Wow factor

This cute establishment definitely possesses the wow factor. The restaurant’s décor is tasteful, cosy yet bright, and above all, comfortable. We adored the ambient lighting and the rustic feel created by the furnishings. Little signs such as “Wine improves with age. I improve with wine” cannot help but make you smile.

Very attentive

We arrived just as the doors opened. Yes! We were hungry. We ordered a simple favourite of ours – bread and oil with balsamic to start. This was lovely and fresh, and set us up nicely for the carvery ahead. There were some enticing ‘specials’ on offer but we were here for a traditional roast dinner. It is worth pointing out that if sampling the carvery is not for you, there are over 50 other dishes available.

The attentive staff were brilliant and James, who looked after our table was an absolute star and a gentleman.

I was half-expecting to be given a ticket or a number but was informed everyone is escorted to the carvery by their waiter. What a lovely touch. This is also a great way to find out what is on offer and ask any questions you might have.

Great choice

Pork belly stuffed with apple was one of the meats available and immediately this tells you that a little more thought goes into this carvery than in some places you might visit. This was my guest’s choice so I decided to sample the beef. There were then ample choices for vegetables including some fantastic looking carrots and parsnips, cauliflower cheese and red cabbage among others. The roast potatoes looked great too.

What about the Yorkshire puddings? Well, we were rather impressed to find that these are brought to your table accompanied by a delicious gravy once you return to your seats.

Simply brilliant – what else can we say?

I cannot believe that my guest and I would be the only ones to slightly over-indulge when visiting a carvery. Our plates did look rather busy, but I suppose it’s a massive compliment to say both were squeaky clean by the time we had finished. The food was simply brilliant. What else can we say? I am extremely fussy when it comes to roast potatoes. I have spent years perfecting them myself for friends and family. Yet these, I reluctantly confess, surpassed all my efforts. The meats were brilliantly cooked, the vegetables outstanding, and the gravy was delicious.

This was probably the best carvery I have ever sampled.

Desserts? The choices are great and incredibly inviting but could we manage one? You must be joking!

Why not try this carvery on a weekday? At the time of writing, The Ship offer a carvery and dessert of the day for just £8.95 all day Monday and from 12pm to 6pm Tuesday to Friday.
