The Crown Pub & Restaurant, Winslow Road, Granborough, Buckingham, MK18 3NJ
A busy and productive week meant that both my colleague and I had a rare Saturday free to do as we pleased. For us, this invariably involves food. We agreed that a return to The Crown for lunch, in the charming village of Granborough was long overdue.
Full of character
The Crown is a pub full of character, with an attractive restaurant situated in their conservatory. This is a popular venue and is ideal for any occasion. If you like seafood; you will surely be tempted by the Chef’s specials served every evening, with fish sourced from Brixham Market.
I opted to start with the amazing-looking Pork, Sage & Apple Scotch Egg, Mustard Piccalilli. This was brilliant presentation personified and tasted as exciting as it looked. The homemade piccalilli was superb and proved an ideal and moreish accompaniment. It almost seemed a shame to ruin this dish by cutting into the Scotch Egg, revealing a lovely runny centre. It was not long before the plate was left squeaky clean.
My guest chose a lighter option to start, selecting the Welsh Rarebit Toasts from an inviting choice of appetisers. Much enjoyed, this was full of wholesome flavours. Simple, yet effective.
When it came to choosing my main course I ran into a few problems. What do you do when absolutely everything appeals? I politely asked what was the most popular main course on the menu and decided that would be my choice. Roasted Breast of Chicken, Wilted Spinach, Tenderstem Broccoli, Mushroom Cream Sauce & Crispy Potatoes was the answer.
This amazing looking dish really was a plate of pure excellence. I don’t believe it could have been prepared any better. I loved the contrasting textures of the incredibly soft chicken and the crispy potatoes. The seasoning was spot on, the sauce perfect. No wonder this is popular at The Crown!
The unusually quiet guest
My guest was unusually quiet as they tucked into their choice of 10oz Rib-Eye Steak, Button Mushrooms, Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Triple Cooked Chips. This normally arrives with a peppercorn sauce but my guest decided to try this dish without it. The steak was cooked to perfection and oozing with flavour. The triple cooked chips were impressive.
No room for dessert
We were both pleasantly full and opting for a dessert after eating such beautiful food was hugely tempting. Had my guest opted for a sweet I would have joined them. I had my eye on the Honey & Cinnamon Panna Cotta, Mulled Wine Pear, Ginger Cookie. Maybe next time?
Service with sincerity
It seems especially relevant to mention that the service throughout our visit was exemplary. We were well looked after with genuine sincerity by knowledgeable staff who enhanced our experience.
We adored the food the last time we visited this beautiful location and we will not leave it quite so long until we return. Fantastic!
In conclusion, it is fair to say there will be a few people who haven’t heard of The Crown. Some may not even know of Granborough. The village of Granborough is just a few minutes from Winslow and we reached our destination from Central Milton Keynes in just over 20 minutes.
