Sundays won’t be the same again…
When you wake up on a Sunday morning and decide you’re not going to cook, it’s likely you’re avoiding the preparation of the veg, peeling the potatoes, cooking for hours and of course, washing up. Then, when you decide instead to eat out for Sunday lunch; the option of a curry might not be the first choice of cuisine that springs to mind. This did apply to us. Not anymore!
Many restaurants have tried and failed to become more appealing by offering a buffet. Rarely does their a la carte menu translate successfully to a fully-fledged buffet. If anything, Maaya, a favourite of ours already; has enhanced their growing reputation for serving Indian food at its very best. In short, their buffet and the choices available are outstanding.
Stylish family venue
There was a bustling, family atmosphere in this stylish restaurant as my guest and I took to our seats. We promptly ordered our drinks before making our way over to the food. You have the option to start with some poppadoms and chutneys. However, my eyes caught sight of one of my favourite Maaya dishes – the Chili Chicken. This is Calcutta style Indo-Chinese chilli chicken with onions and peppers in soy sauce. This dish oozes with flavour and also has a lovely level of spice.
I enjoyed this alongside lamb kebabs cooked with ground spices, onions and peppers. These had a great texture, were flavoursome and pretty spicy too. I also tried some small vegetable samosas (you could eat these all day long!) and an exceptional onion bhaji. My guest enjoyed the onion bhaji so much that they had another with their main course. These had the perfect, crispy texture and I was in agreement when they commented that these were probably amongst the best we had ever tried. Wow!
We waited a short while before our main courses. When we returned after making our choices we were impressed to see a naan bread on our table waiting for us. These are included as part of your buffet but cooked freshly to order by the kitchen once you begin your starters. Great timing and absolutely delicious.
Our choices for curry here were both chicken – myself opting for the Jalfrezi and my guest the Tikka Massala. There were also a couple of lamb and vegetable dishes to choose from. My Jalfrezi was excellent. Jalfrezi’s can be quite hot, but this wasn’t just a heat sensation. I found the flavours incredible and the chicken was soft and tender. My guest again praised the onion bhaji, “So good!” as they tucked into their massala. We were both equally complimentary about the Sag Aloo – a traditional potato and spinach dish – simple yet tasty with the softest of potatoes.
We were now both pretty full and mightily impressed. The food at Maaya has always been to the highest standard and this is not compromised at all by catering for larger numbers with a buffet.
This is the perfect family venue to enjoy seriously good food at a price you can afford.
